Tilted Women Textile Banner Workshop Part 1

Thu 7 May 2026

Workshop 12-2pm

From Lorina Bulwer, incarcerated on the woman’s lunatic ward in Great Yarmouth in 1893, to artist Louise Bourgeois, many ‘disorderly’ women have communicated their rage and frustration via embroidered text; the urge to write their unspeakable pain and distress assuaged through the piercing of fabric with needle and thread, creating textile ‘letters’ and artworks as radical and political material culture.

Join design historian, textile artist and curator Dr Jane Hattrick as we begin to map and record the liminal life histories of women in Norfolk through stitch and explore what a Tilted Women’s textile banner might look like. Please bring your notebooks and pencils – embroidery needles, thread and fabrics will be provided and simple stitches taught. Any ideas in terms of women to include on the banner would be very welcome.
