Helen of Norwich is a far-fetched , quirky, solo performer who performs stories, poems and songs around East Anglia.
Using her audience as ‘free therapy’ she is working her way through all her psychological issues one gig at a time. Her observational style and parody songs cover such subjects as being queer and religious, adoption and worrying about lost gloves.
She spends her spare time wondering what dogs might be thinking and trying to write down jokes on her phone in meetings without anyone seeing.
She also works as a psychotherapist and lives in Norwich with her partner Saint. She has attended Tilted Women since 2023 as regularly performs at True Stories Live at Norwich Arts Centre.
This 3 week course will probably be the least academic thing you will ever do! We will look at women comedians from a feminist perspective, comparing a number of wide ranging successful comics. We will first watch their material and then compare how they have approached different subjects from a women’s perspective.
Using group discussion we will think about some of the following questions;
Which comedian’s approach do you prefer?
Which is funnier?
Are you offended? Disgusted?
How have the decades changed the way women’s issues are explored?
Does this joke change the way you see yourself?
Week 1 – children and mothering
Week 2 – body size and women’s health.
Week 3 – Minority issues such as race, disability and sexuality
Some of comedians we will see are
Tig Notaro
Sindhu Vee
Joyce Grenfell
Victoria Wood
Gina Yashire
Bridget Everett
Rosie Jones
