James McDermott – Associate Artist
James McDermott is a Norfolk based scriptwriter and creative writing teacher.
James trained at The University of East Anglia where he graduated with First Class BA Hons in Scriptwriting & Performance and an MA (Distinction) in Scriptwriting. James has participated on Hampstead Theatre’s Inspire: The Next Playwright Program 2019, Park Theatre’s Script Accelerator Program 2018, The Criterion Theatre’s New Writing Program 2018, The Royal Court Writers Group 2017, Soho Theatre Writers Lab 2016 and HighTide Young Writers Academy 2016.

James has co-written several plays including ‘Reveal’ (an active reality adventure commissioned by Collusion co-written with Marcus Romer; performed across West Norfolk); ‘Based On A True Story’ (TIE show about difference co-written with Rob Salmon; New Wolsey Ipswich and tour of Suffolk schools), ‘Human Screens’ (outdoor theatre installation created with Collusion and West Suffolk College; streets of Bury St Edmunds), ‘Come Yew In’ (outdoor theatre event co-written with Simon Floyd; tour of Norwich parks and council estates; Winner of Norfolk Arts Award for Best Large Scale Project 2017), ‘Out140: The Little Play Of Coming Out Stories’ (co-written with Shelly Telly and Vince Laws; Norfolk and Norwich Festival 2017) and ‘Hide’ (site specific play for RSPB Strumpshaw Fen co-written with Steve Waters).
James is currently writing new plays for HighTide, Eastern Angles, Hampstead Theatre and Norwich Arts Centre. He is developing TV series with Hat Trick, Big Talk and Hare & Tortoise.
James teaches scriptwriting at Norwich Theatre Royal, New Wolsey Ipswich, Marina Theatre Lowestoft and in schools and care homes across Norfolk and Suffolk.
James is Diversity Consultant at Norwich Arts Centre, a Trustee of Suffolk’s INK New Writing Festival and a Board Member of Holt Festival.
