An immersive stage performance by artist Marcia X.
Artist Marcia X is a Puerto Rican-American artist from Chicago, based in Norwich, UK. Her work centres around the “existential, cultural crisis women of color experience in the Diaspora.”
‘The Self is a Trick of Memory’ is a solo show merging performance, film and installation. It’s a case study of the fragmentation of the self when living in the Diaspora. It is also about the healing power of cultural memory, and the stark realities of colonialism in the face of disaster.
Filmed and (mostly) written just months before Hurricane Maria made landfall, ‘The Self is a Trick of Memory’ explores an island of lush green mountains, prayers to ancestors and individuals struggle to exist as an exile in the ‘unhomely’ Diaspora.
