“Rachel Mars is electrifying.” The Guardian
“Both joyful and delightfully painful. Moved me to celebrate what is terribly human with song and revelry, delivered masterfully.” Ari Barbanell, American Repertory Theatre, Boston
“A show of wit and verve that -aptly- hides a dark heart.” Louise Stephens, Royal Court Theatre, London
“A magnificent ode to our f*cked-up times.” Matthieu Goeury, Vooruit, Belgium
A Welcome! To you and to me and our sticky, spikey, shameful bits! This fairy comes round your house. You, she says, are in luck. Ask for anything you want. Anything in the world and I’ll give it to you. But whatever you ask for, your neighbour gets double. Our Carnal Hearts is a gleeful, thrilling and murky celebration of envy, competitive spirits and all the times we f*ck eachother over. Performed with a live surround-sound choral score, it is born from the suspect parentage of an ideological rally, a drunken sing-song and a seductive dream.
Rachel Mars is a performance maker with a background in theatre, live art and comedy. She explores the idiosyncratic cultural and political constructs that inform the way we are together, as people, just trying to figure it all out. She’s recently interrogated humour, the language of 80’s pop and politics and the science of rage. 5 She’s created work alongside The Royal Court and the Tate Modern, been commissioned by Cambridge Junction, CPT, Fuel Theatre and been in residency at The Orchard Project (NY) and Cove Park (UK). Her performances have been shown around the UK including at The Barbican, South Bank Centre and Royal Exchange Manchester and at festivals internationally including Fusebox, Austin and Wildside, Montreal. Rachel also leads workshops for students and artists of all backgrounds. Her work is often supported by grants from Arts Council, England.
Music composed and arranged by Louise Mothersole.
