Life Through a Lens is an educational project funded by Ormiston Children & Families Trust. The charity worked with 15 young Travellers, aged 12 to 21, as they enrolled on a 20-week photography course to learn and develop new skills. At the end of the course they gained an Arts Award, the equivalent to a GCSE.
The aim of the project was to challenge the prejudice and negative stereotypes of Gypsy and Traveller culture that have arisen from TV shows such as Big Fat Gypsy Weddings, as young Gypsies and Travellers are currently living with more prejudice and stereotypical labeling than ever before.
The course culminated in the powerful images that make up this exhibition. The photographs give a unique insight into their lives, and the course dramatically increased the self-esteem and confidence of all the young people involved.
