We are delighted to be hosting Community Hotspot groups again this winter.
The groups will happen every Thursday from 11th Jan – 18th April, 10am-12pm. The sessions will run in 3 blocks of 5 weeks and a different artist will facilitate each block. The groups are free to join but booking is essential as spaces are limited. Hot drinks and biscuits will be provided during the halfway break.
During each two hour session a female artist will use reading material and images to spark conversations on female related topics.
In keeping with the original Tilted Women event in 2022 we ask that for the first hour, anyone who attends who identifies as a man, listens to the discussions and saves their comments until after the break.
The Female Body in Poetry with Helen Ivory
For centuries, the Western patriarchal system has controlled how we feel about and present our bodies. Are we too fat/ too thin, too loud/ too quiet, are we sexy/ are we good mothers – do we comply with the so-called feminine ideal? Join poet Helen Ivory as we explore representations of the female body in poetry, from puberty to post-menopause. Let’s have a look at how men have written about women, and ways in which women have claimed their bodies from being tools of social oppression. Let’s look at how we live with, and inside our mutable, powerful bodies . . . No specialist knowledge about the subject or poetry are needed – poems are little boxes – let’s open some up and see what’s inside . . .
Helen Ivory’s fourth Bloodaxe collection is The Anatomical Venus (2019) her forthcoming collection is Constructing a Witch(2024). She has led workshops and taught in adult education since 1999.
