WALLS are a band from London made up of members Sam Willis (of ALLEZ-ALLEZ) and Alessio Natalizia (of BANJO OR FREAKOUT). Originally from Manchester, but based in London since ’96, Willis has long been an admirer of the Cologne sound, instilling his productions (and dj mixes for the influential podcast series located at www.allez-allez.co.uk) with the euphoric, pop sensibilities and deep grooves that are a KOMPAKT hallmark.
Natalizia hails from Vasto, Italy but relocated to London in 2008 to pursue his musical dreams – driven by the wild guitar of This Heat and propulsive rhythms of Can as well as Burial’s inner city atmospherics and soul. The pair met in 2009 while ALLEZ-ALLEZ were remixing BANJO OR FREAKOUT’s “Mr. No”, they quickly realized that the natural combination of Alessio’s and guitar play and haunting vocals together with Willis’ emotive synth lines and sample manipulation magic was a match made in heaven.
They have applied their unique sonic touch on remixes for THE FIELD’s ‘Leave It’ and PANTHA DU PRINCE’s future anthem ‘Stick To My Side feat. Panda Bear’.
Walls once again frazzled minds and made hearts swoon with the release of their second album ‘Coracle’ (26th September) – once again they captured the shimmering layers of guitar and synths, ecstatic melodies and emotive vocals that made their debut an instant classic.
Their first single ‘Sunporch’ (rel. 29th August) reinforced the ground they explored with ‘Gaberdine’, a towering arpeggiated bass line surrounded by a swirling web of guitars and percussion – a much more dancefloor orientated set, taking the promise of their debut onto giddy new heights…
They’ve received the great honour of being invited to tour the US with Battles in October and their ATP curated Nightmare Before Christmas event in December.
What a year 2010 was for WALLS… not content with signing to the prestigious KOMPAKT label, the shimmering shoegaze electronica of their debut self titled album went on to receive glowing critical acclaim including Mojo’s coveted Electronic Album Of The Year (beating out Caribou, Matthew Dear and LCD Soundsystem no less), 4/5 in The Guardian, 9/10 in NME (as well as featuring in their albums of the year), iDJ, Vice and more superlatives from Groove, DJ mag and a host of blogs and websites.
In addition to being a big hit with the critics, WALLS debut was also a favourite amongst their peers – Jamie XX, James Holden (included them on his DJ Kicks), Caribou (asked them to remix his track Kaili as well as support him at his triumphant Shepherd’s Bush Empire show), The Field (asked them to remix his track ‘Leave It’ and support him), Pantha Du Prince (who asked them to remix his track w/ Panda Bear ‘Stick To My Side’).
