This Is The Kit – is Kate Stables playing banjo, guitar and a voice of unaffected clarity accompanied by her psychedelic band creating primal and electric textures onto songs of unpretentious beauty.

TITK has released two albums and a handful of singles since 2006. They have toured in the UK, Japan, and Europe and may appear in many guises: solo, duo, psychedelic rock-formation, 4-4-2, unplugged acoustic gigs, choir workshops, homeshows, busking etc.

They have had the pleasure of supporting people like Jeffrey Lewis, Herman Dune, Jose Gonzales, John Parish, The National, Jolie Holland…

Their 2008 album ‘Krülle Bol’, was produced by John Parish and 2010 album “Wriggle Out The Restless” features members of Francois and The Atlas Mountains, The Liftmen, and Get The Blessing to name but a few.
Here’s what some nice people have said about the project…

You thought you didn’t like the banjo but you were wrong pal. Kate Stables rips forward with a hypnotic twang pattern and a voice of rare unaffected beauty.Accompanied by a backing-band of minimal psychedelia, This is the Kit will transport you to a warm bath in the middle of a forest.’

“amazing amazing album which i think should have been on the mercury music awards short list” – Guy Garvey (Elbow).

“absolutely gorgeous, like an aural bath with the warm water lapping over you”- Cerys Matthew, BBC 6 music.

“You thought you didn’t like the banjo but you were wrong pal. Kate Stables rips forward with a hypnotic twang pattern and a voice of rare unaffected beauty. Accompanied by a backing-band of minimal psychedelia”- Neil Smith, the liftmen.

“just one of the best things i’ve heard all year, the rest of the lp’s pretty good too….wonderful wonderful stuff”- Gideon Coe, BBC 6 music.

As a teenager Kate started playing gigs around the south-east of England.
She moved to Bristol in 2003 and formed the band Whalebone Polly with Rachael Dadd. They made an album “Recording With The Windows Open” with the violinist and animater Virpi Kettu. They had a ball and played the acoustic stage at Glastonbury festival in 2004.

In Bristol, Kate also started playing trumpet and banjo for the group Morningstar, who she’s been playing and touring with ever since.

In 2005 Sunday Best released the critically acclaimed 7” single “Two Wooden Spoons/ Come A Cropper” which has since become something of a cult classic (fetching ridiculous prices on ebay).
In 2006 she completed sessions with Radio One (Rob da Bank) and Resonance FM, along with plays on other shows on Radio One & 6music.

Always interested in working with small record labels, the Hampshire based label tape club records released a cassette single of the songs White Ash Cut and Vitamins.

Also in 2006, the Japanese label Angel’s Egg released a collection of demo recordings “Where It Lives”.

In 2008 the album ‘Krülle Bol’, was produced by John Parish and was released on the French label Microbe Records.

In 2009 Need no water records released Birchwood beaker on a split single with the Belgian band Soy un Caballo. A White 7″ vinyl with Kate’s version on one side and a French version on the other side. The Whalebone Polly EP “Taproot and Sill” was released on Dreamboat records in September.

2010 saw the release of the 2nd LP “Wriggle Out The Restless” featuring members of Francois and The Atlas Mountains and The Liftmen, preceded by 7″ ‘Moon/ Treehouse’ on Need No Water.

2011 sees the band playing out as much as possible, usually with psychedelic rhythm section. Need No Water plan to release another single, “Earthquake”, from the ‘Wriggle’ album along with some remixes by Buddy peace, Plaisir de France and Fear of Theydon. The Album will also be released in special edition, packaged with an extra disc of remixes by such artists as John Parish, Rachael Dadd, Shorebilly and Bfax.
