Roots and Rhythm Day
Featuring Dilanga and Rabo de Foguete
Saturday 10 September
NORCA brings you a feast of Latin music from Cuba and Brazil, with two exciting and vibrant bands.
During the day there will be a chance to take part in drumming and singing workshops offered by the bands.
Dilanga bring you the energy and exuberance of authentic Rumba. The group is made up of musicians who spearhead London’s Latin and Afro-Cuban music scene. The word ‘dilanga’ in Cuban Ki-congo means ’times past’, reflecting the Afro-Cuban traditions from which the group draws knowledge and inspiration. True to the essence of Rumba, Dilanga’s style comes from injecting elements of their diverse musical backgrounds into the traditional form. Rumba is an inclusive ‘happening’ of drumming, singing and dancing that originated in Cuba. It has a playful, undulating energy, and sparks will fly!
“Dilanga play sincere, authentic Afro-Cuban Rumba with the drive, fire and passion that one associates with this music. The first time I saw them I was shocked at the huge sound and pyrotechnics they delivered. This is Rumba uncut – the way it should be.” Snowboy
Rabo de Foguete combine the best of Brazilian popular music with the power of a bateria. This 12-piece band brings you everything from Jorge Benjor to Lenine, offering a vibrant show which mixes traditional and contemporary material into a high energy performance. They have recently wowed audiences at the Guanabara Club, Covent Garden, and PlayFest. The band is inspired by the samba-funk-rock fusion of Monobloco and draws from experienced Norwich-based sambistas and musicians. Guaranteed to get you dancing!
