Getting the Most out of Your Digital Compact Camera Introduction

If you have a compact digital automatic camera and would like a hands-on approach to learning how to use it, this course offers newcomers and beginner photographers the chance to explore the theory, practice and fun of digital photography and to get the most out of your camera.


This is an introductory course suitable for beginners to digital photography. Basic computer skills desirable i.e. word processing.

What will the course cover?

* The pros and cons of digital photography.
* Understanding the fundamental features of compact digital cameras: image size options, storage types, optical and digital zooms, the various automatic settings etc.
* Taking a selection of photographs that explore the various preset and focus options.
* Methods of transferring them onto the computer.
* Basic methods of improving and modifying the pictures in Photoshop.
* Basic printing issues.
* Saving in suitable file formats for different uses onto CD.

What can I expect to achieve?

By the end of this course you should be able to understand the main features of your camera. You should have explored how to use image editing software (in this case Photoshop) to improve your photos and understand some of the choices available to you when saving or printing your images.

How will I be taught?

The computers are Apple Macintosh G5s with Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop Elements. PC users note: the software Photoshop is identical to the PC version and all files created on the course will be PC compatible. The course structure consists of a programme of structured practical exercises, demonstrations and discussions. The small group numbers ensure that one to one help and advice is given throughout.

There will be a lunch break of 30 minutes.

What should I bring?

Bring along your digital camera, your camera’s manual (user guide), spare batteries and the connecting cable to attach to the computer.
Note: This course is only concerned with compact digital cameras on automatic settings. If you have an SLR camera and are interested in learning how to use it on manual setting then contact the NAC Box Office to ask about the Go Manual courses for SLR owners.

Please note, most courses require a minimum of four participants to run. If we do not receive enough bookings the course will be cancelled a few days before it is due to start, and your money will be refunded. Refunds cannot otherwise be given unless the course has a waiting list and your place can be filled.
