PETER AKEHURST – A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY
With a great passion for photography and the moving image from an early age Peter’s career began in a London press agency near Fleet Street. It was here he worked with the great photographers of the time learning the basics as well as photo-journalism. However, it was fashion photography that turned his head after seeing the work of Avedon and Parkinson. He then moved to the famous John French studio and became David Bailey’s first ever assistant. He soon acquired many of his own fashion clients and shot his first ever fashion spread for Vanity Fair when only nineteen. He was also commissioned to cover the Paris Collections.
With his reputation he was approached by David Puttnam (now Lord) to work on a new publishing venture where he shared the famous Sunday Times studio with Lord Snowdon. This created the opportunity to work with actors such as John Geilgud, Rod Steiger, James Stewart, David Hemmings and Vanessa Redgrave. This same period was mixed with writing music, show business management and working with stars like Harry Secombe, Anita Harris, Shirley Bassey, Lisa Minnelli and Sammy Davis Jnr.
Peter then built his own studio and created major beauty campaigns for Avon, Revlon and Estee Lauder together with editorial features for the glossies. At this time he also recognised the new emerging video market and produced the first highly acclaimed agency programmes. As a producer and director in his own right he built up an impressive client list on commercials for British Airways, Proctor & Gamble and others as well as creating his first television series which he created, produced and directed for several years.
At present Peter is writing a drama trilogy and in development is a documentary series on fashion and culture – a series on great British photographers and a co-production drama series with Hollywood.
Peter still shoots the single image and is available for commissions in all formats.
