Because of Love marks a major departure in Franko B’s practice. It is a large-scale, stage-based, full-length theatrical performance, combining dance, film, soundscore, and sculpture. The piece is concerned with the nostalgia of memory, its emotional and romantic charge, and draws upon influential and significant events from Franko B’s biography to explore themes of childhood, humanity, inhumanity, love and grief, rejection, isolation, and loneliness.
Ambitious in its scale and complexity, it brings together elements of human presence, video, originally commissioned music, film and lighting to create an emotionally charged, non-linear movement-driven narrative and a series of stunning images that accumulate in a shattering climax. The centrepiece of the work is a choreographed duet with Franko B and a life-sized animatronic polar bear.
