Electricity in our Homes
As loudandquiet.com says, “If it feels like London clatter punk trio Electricity In Our Homes have been around for years it’s because they have. Five to be exact. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it makes their debut album long-awaited. Overdue, even.”
The casual pace has been working in their favour, too: 2011 found the trio starring on the main stage at the 1234 Festival with Black Lips and The Raveonettes, and their European excursions mean they are now as likely to play in Leipzig as they are Liverpool. Nor have they been slacking on the recording front: championed by alternative icons as varied as Tim Burgess and Colin Newman of Wire, EIOH have worked stealthily on the East London underground and released six singles on a selection of esteemed indie labels including Too Pure and 4AD.
So, hurrah! Fierce Panda releases Dear Shareholder on Monday 27 February, three days after Paul, Charles and Bonnie bring their pop-defying melodic bendiness to wombatwombat.
With a clattering rhythmic undercurrent, some seriously scratchy guitars and Bonnie’s gently growling bass often to the fore, Dear Shareholder melts the mind by putting the disco into discordant. Fast As Lightning evokes the intense knockabout spirit of Postcard, the hypnotic Oranges is borne of the Stereolab lab, Buddy Lemonade guzzles from the C86 siphon and pretty much everything else sounds like there’s a rum-swiggingly room-spinningly ramshackle Peel Session party going on in their head and everyone’s invited. The fact that Aching, Breaking appears to concern itself with zebras only adds to the fun.
“The Fall once proved that stark originality can come from limited technical know-how and bags of imagination, and EIOH are one of a few nearing such unapologetic greatness.” (Loud and Quiet)
“A funky and jazzy slice of 80’s post-punk with a total pop hook in the chorus. Inspiring stuff. (Rough Trade)
Octagon Court
Main support comes from Norwich’s contemporary pop duo extraordinaire, Octagon Court.
Bare-footed theatrical crooner Charlie CC Audsley’s most recent serenading of NAC’s audience included an accompanying visual spectacle that involved dipping his limbs into containers of paint as multi-instrumentalist Stephen Draycott obliviously mixed a marvellous musical backdrop of post-pop/new-wave noise.
We’re talking art-pop, proper: Prepare to be aurally and visually stunned.
“To us it’s a pantomime horse wreaking havoc at a Talking Heads show.” (tweeOFF!)
Invisible Cities
Although playing only their second gig, Invisible Cities are no strangers to performance, having already bagged a live session with Breakthru Radio.
The Norwich quartet – which features Richard Squires (ex-Bearsuit) and Owen Cox (ex-Elle S’Appelle) – boasts a well developed tight and powerful sound that coolly observes the full emotional spectrum from a calculated distance, nodding its head to Talking Heads, Sonic Youth, New Order, Pixies and Roxy Music.
Plus Howlback Hum featuring James Boyce + Terence Dungey + The Gore Vidals + Shane O’Linski + DJIndge.
